Minor Hockey needs officials
If you are interested in becoming a hockey official – this is for you!

It will provide you with all the information you need to get your officiating career started.

The level system, Level I through Level VI, is the foundation for the training and development of amateur hockey officials across Canada. Hockey Canada has categorized the hockey played in Canada into four basic streams, each with different priorities.

They include:

  • Initiation
  • Recreational
  • Competitive
  • Program of Excellence
The Hockey Canada officiating program has opportunities for everyone from the Initiation at Level I, through to the Program of Excellence Levels V and VI.

Pay:  Remuneration for an official is respectable.  It typically averages about $20/hour for younger levels and goes up from there.  Most officials who join officiating do it for the money to begin with, but then develop a love for it.

Scheduling:  You have the opportunity to use technology/mobile apps through your local Referee Association to select your availability to be scheduled games.

Camaraderie:  Most people who leave hockey miss the social aspect of it.  The ability to be a part of a team, and accomplish a common goal.  Officiating offers this experience

Fitness:  Being an official requires a good level of fitness, however it also offers an opportunity to get some exercise, and stay in shape.

Being involved in the games:  Whether still playing minor or junior hockey or have moved on in your career, staying active in the game is a great benefit to you and players.  Many people who leave hockey still enjoy the game.  By becoming an official you get to enjoy the game by remaining in it.

Progression:  Many officials are content to stay in the game at the minor hockey level, some are chosen to be developed in the Program of Excellence or add junior hockey to their officiating resume.

Future Employment:  For young officials still attending secondary school or post-secondary school, the achievement of being an official reflects positively on your resume for future employment opportunities.
